Three times a year, a bunch of Ogilvy folk head out to Uganda for a week to help with valuable projects for the local community.
Every four months, 12 volunteers from around the Ogilvy Group fly out to the Southern Uganda town of Buikwe for a week to get their hands dirty working on a project for the local community. And anyone can help, in any number of ways, from pushing a wheelbarrow in Uganda to putting up posters in the office. If we all lend a hand, together we can make a real difference.
We’re currently building a secondary school for 450 kids in Buikwe. This is a major five-year project, but it’s just the beginning. We hope to do much, much more. We’re looking to build an orphanage for example, fund new farm machinery and bore a well.
But there’s a huge amount to do. We need to raise as much money as possible and we need to recruit and support volunteers from all over the Ogilvy Group. We also need to drive awareness of the project, and find a way to broadcast the huge difference it will make to people’s lives.
And it really will make a difference. For example, we chose to build a secondary school because there simply aren’t enough schools in Uganda, and the children who do manage to get an education usually have to leave at 14 and start labouring to support their families. Hopefully, this secondary school will help provide the kids of Buikwe with more opportunities. And with your help, we can continue to affect positive change and transform the lives of even more people.
There’s a Just Giving website, where you can make a donation should you wish.
This is an amazing legacy to be involved with. It’s not humanitarian PR, a tax-evasion scheme or a feel-good gesture. It has a use-value, regardless of who knows about it. It’s democratic, too. Everyone from account executive to chief executive can be – and is – involved. And it’s a sustainable project. We’ve made sure we’re partnered with an established charity in International Need, and that we’re working in a part of the world where they have a strong, nurturing presence. Longevity and stability are vital.
It’s also an exciting communications challenge. Trying to drive fundraising and awareness across the Ogilvy Group, friends and family we need to raise as much money as we can. We are looking to find increasingly innovative and imaginative ways to break through, to engage and recruit. This way, we can harness the power and the resources of the Ogilvy Group to make a real difference.
That’s where you come in. If you’re interested in volunteering, please get in touch if you’d like to get involved.
